Bulls Bucked & Cowboys Battled

Rimbey, Alberta - The crowd increased in size over last year, which meant that the second annual Hell On Hooves event put on by the Sawyer, Vold and Sahli crew was off to great start...the bulls were bucking!

On a night that included 30 riders compete in a long round, 6 junior bull riders, an astounding 6yr old steer rider (Jayden Vold), a Calcutta for local charities and a short round of ten riders...the fans definitely go their money’s worth.

The riders looked fit, like they had taken care of themselves over winter and changed little things such as working out or diet in an attempt to increase their performance and results for this season. Great job to those riders that are not only on a training program (fitness, diet, practice, mental imagery) but to those that have started for the first time ever.

Bull Riders Canada has a new number one man as Lane Cook, Quesnel, BC moved from fifth place to the head of the class after placing sixth in the long round and second in the short round. Local rider Dustin Glenn also jumped from seventh to third after placing forth in the long round.

The bulls were bucking and the riders were battling. In the end there were there were three cowboys who rode two bulls. Griffin Smeltzer placed sixth in the long round and won the short round with the highest marked ride of the night; an 85.5 effort on Vold Rodeo Prescott 3093 Jersey Lick.

Cork was fifth in the long round (one point better than Smeltzer) and second in the short round with an 84.5 effort. Smeltzer and Cork finished a total of 155.5 on two and split second and third place. In the end, Cawl Braithwaite, Pincher Creek, AB who is returning after nearly a one year sabbatical, won the long round on his re-ride bull with an 84.5 score on Outlaw Buckers Rodeo 98 White Russian. Cawl followed it up with a solid 83.5 score in the short round. Braithwaite said it felt to good to get the win but understands that a bull riding season is a marathon and not sprint. Recognizing that, Braithwaite credits his personal fitness, core strength and focus as keys to being successful.

Before the event, BRC President Russell Friend went over some of the exciting things planned for the upcoming season which include: two events in Montana July 20 and 21st with minimum $5000.00 added at each one (BRC Rule book and payouts), co-sanctioning opportunities with the BRCA for the Smithers, BC event where BRC can enter the bull riding on the Thursday and also enter the rodeo Friday and Saturday (one card with points counting), two events in Eastern Canada that are planned to be BRC bull ridings (one with $10000.00 added and another with $7000.00 added) where the BRC members can enter the bull riding and then stay for up to three IPRA rodeos over the same weekend. Friend also shared that the BRC is in the final stages of securing the Season V BRC National Finals in Lloydminster early December.

The next event on the schedule is the Louis Estates Bull A Rama in Vernon, BC on April 15th; travel safe!
